The Akron Pizza Task Force visits Angelina’s Pizza House June 8th, 2020 words and photos by Marisa Vaccaro, Akron Pizza Task Force The other night I stopped by Angelina’s Pizza House in Chapel Hill. Angelina’s is combined with Tommy’s Bar and Grille, making the menu pretty sizable. You can make your own pizza or you can choose from their specialty pizzas. They also have subs, burgers, salads, wings and a variety of sides. I was surprised by how small it looked from the outside, as the inside was a lot bigger than I imagined. It has a bar and a couple of tables where you could sit and eat, at least when we are not in a pandemic. It feels like a nice family place in the early evenings and then at night it likely turns into more of an adult environment. However, it has a good crunch to it. It doesn’t have any seasoning but it does have a nice buttery taste. Sauce: Our pizza was made with a classic red tomato sauce. It was a little sweet but also savory. It has a good flavor and complemented the pizza toppings well. However, they put a pretty light amount of sauce on their pizza. I personally don’t like a lot of sauce on my pizza, so I didn’t mind, but that could be a problem for others. Toppings: Angelina’s has a lot of toppings to choose from. We got banana peppers and pepperoni on our pizza. I thought they put on a generous amount of toppings, making it a perfect ratio. The pepperoni had a nice crispiness to it and provided a nice savory flavor. Cheese: It was very cheesy in the middle of the pizza but not on the outer edges. Angelina’s does not cut their pizzas like you are probably used to seeing. They cut it into squares, 4×4 to be exact. Therefore, when you took a middle piece there would be a decent cheese pull, unlike the outer pieces. The cheese was pretty good but a little chewy. Get The Devil Strip in your inbox! The Final Slice Takeout: I ordered on the phone and went to pick it up. When I walked in, I was immediately greeted by a nice young man who was quick to grab my order and ring it up. They also gave me a free side of coleslaw because it was my first time there. $$$: Angelina’s does not come cheap. They have been serving North Akron since 1947, so I guess that’s the price you pay for some good pizza. Their large, 16-inch pizza with two toppings is $18.50, and they charge extra per topping. This pizza might be on the pricey side, but the large pizza fed four people with a couple pieces left over. Rating: We’ll give Angelina’s Pizza 8 out of 10 slices.
