We believe you deserve to know where we stand and how our organization works, so you know you can trust our work is free from outside influence. As such, here is a current list of donors who have supported The Devil Strip with philanthropic funding since January 2017.
$35,000 – Knight Arts Challenge to support two summers of live, local music events: Live at Lock 4 and Signal Tree Festival
$25,000 – G.A.R. Foundation to support the hire of an Editor-in-Chief and Business Development Director while publisher Chris Horne attended Stanford University as a JSK Journalism Fellow.
$25,000 – Knight Foundation, Communities Program to support the hire of an Editor-in-Chief and Business Development Director while publisher Chris Horne attended Stanford University as a JSK Journalism Fellow.
$30,000 – Membership in News Fund from New York University’s Membership Puzzle Project to support audience research and development leading into The Devil Strip’s conversion to a local news cooperative.
$5,000 – Maynard Family Foundation to support operations as The Devil Strip transitions to a local news cooperative.
$2,500 – Rebecca D. and William H. Considine Family Fund Donor-Advised Fund to support operations as The Devil Strip transitions to a local news cooperative.
$50,000 – GAR Foundation for general support The Devil Strip’s journalism and community-building work with a portion earmarked specifically for improving our business operations.
$200,000 – This two-year commitment from the Knight Foundation, made as part of its focus on supporting local journalism, underwrites our transition to the nation’s first local news cooperative.
$22,000 – NewsMatch grant matched the amount raised by our members during our first member drive, enabling The Devil Strip to commit to two Report for America fellows.
$34,400 – Funding from the GroundTruth Project covers half of the salary for our two Report for America fellows, Abbey Marshall and H.L. Comeriato, who report on economic development and public health issues affecting residents of Akron.
$18,252 – Federal PPP Loan, though not a donation or grant, we have applied for loan forgiveness. The only “strings” attached to this funding was to keep our staff employed during the pandemic portion of 2020.
$100,000 – Lenfest Foundation on behalf of the Facebook Journalism Project. The Devil Strip was selected to join a cohort of other local news organizations to participate in the Facebook Membership Accelerator, which concluded with this grant to use by Dec. 31, 2020, solely on expenses related to growing our membership program.
$7,500 – Civic Affairs Grant from the Akron Community Foundation to partially support The Devil Strip’s three full-time reporters who are covering Public Health, Equity & Inclusion and Economic Development.
$35,000 – The Summit County COVID-19 Arts and Culture Emergency Grant Relief Fund from the County of Summit government, administered by the Akron Community Foundation to mitigate the financial impact of the pandemic on local arts and culture organizations like The Devil Strip.
