Honoring Local Heroes with the Red Cross January 3rd, 2018 Brian Moore receives 2018 H. Peter Burg Community Leadership Award by Taylor Patterson 01/03/2018 Brian Moore’s interest in philanthropy comes from his childhood. When Moore was 11, his home caught on fire, and his family lost everything. His mother was a widow, and she was working while the kids stayed home. “I remember that it was a snowy day in January and the fire drove us out of the house,” Moore says. “I stood outside with no shoes, and by the end of the day there were all of these volunteers who made sure we had clothes and a place to stay.” He knows that the Red Cross were among those people. Later in life, he became a board member of American Red Cross of Summit and Portage Counties. Each year, Red Cross honors local heroes with the Acts of Courage Awards. Residents in Summit, Portage and Medina Counties are recognized for their selflessness and sacrifice in times of emergency, and one local hero is awarded the H. Peter Burg Community Leadership Award for their community leadership, compassion and dedication to the humanitarian mission of the Red Cross. This year, the Burg Award goes to Moore, who was selected by a committee of past award recipients. Moore and the other local heroes will be honored March 1 at the Hilton in Fairlawn. Moore is an Attorney and avid volunteer in the community. He was raised in Dunkirk, New York, and moved to Akron in 1981 to attend law school. Moore has worked with organizations such as Northern Ohio Golf Charities, Blue Coats, Summit Choir Society, Bridgestone International, Downtown Akron Partnership, Red Cross and numerous others. Moore’s law firm, Roetzel & Andress, encourages volunteering and engaging in the community as well. “I never really started volunteering because I thought there was anything in it for me,” Moore says. “It was always about others.” Moore says that it’s humbling to be mentioned in the same breath as H. Peter Burg, and that receiving this award makes him feel as though he is paying back the community in a way that Burg would appreciate. “I never met Pete Burg,” says Moore. “But I feel like I know him because he lives in the eyes of all the volunteers of the community that you come across as you are serving.” You can donate to the Red Cross and buy tickets for the Acts of Courage event at redcross.org/news/event/local/ohio/northeast/Acts-of-Courage.
