North American First People’s Day 

Several locations and times // Celebrate Akron’s second annual North American First People’s Day with the Portage Path Collaborative at a Native Foods Dinner, new exhibit of Native American art and artifacts at the University of Akron’s Institute for Human Science and Culture at the Cummings, walk with members of the Northern Cheyenne and more. The 8-mile Portage Path was created by indigenous people who populated this area area for millennia before the first Europeans arrived. LIFT Akron: Signal Tree History Hike

Cascade Valley Metro Park / Chuckery Area // 10 am // In October, we’re challenging readers to LIFT Akron by visiting local history. Join The Devil Strip for a hike on the Chuckery Trail to see the Signal Tree, which may have been a landmark for indigenous people walking the Portage Path. Summit Metro Parks classifies this as a difficult trail, so be prepared for hills! This hike is part of the Fall Hiking Spree. Free.

Bath Hollow Art Fest

Bath Hollow Farm // 1-10 pm // The first-ever Bath Hollow Art Fest is designed to be a celebration of community, art and music in Cuyahoga Falls. This one-day pop-up gallery will feature visual artists working in a variety of media, as well as food from The Square Scullery and A Moveable Feast and beer from HiHO Brewing Co. Artists keep every dollar they earn via sales, with no commissions or fees. Free.

Boo at the Zoo

Akron Zoo // 11 am-7 pm // Ghosts and goblins of all ages are welcome at Boo at the Zoo, the Akron Zoo’s annual non-scary Halloween celebration. Bring your own bag or bucket to collect treats from 12 themed treat stations located throughout the zoo. Admission prices vary.

League of Women Voters 2019 Akron General Election Forum

Main Library // 5-8 pm // Join the League of Women Voters for a non-partisan, informal meet and greet with candidates running for Akron City Council ward and at-large seats, Akron Municipal Court and Akron City School Board. Informal ward candidate meet and greet begins at 5 pm. Forum begins at 6 pm. Co-sponsored by local chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the NAACP. Free.

The Big Book Sale

Main Library // 10 am-8 pm Thursday, 10 am-6 pm Friday and 10 am-5 pm Saturday // Join the Friends of the Main Library for the annual Big Book Sale! Thousands of used books, CDs, DVDs and other items available for purchase. Stock will be added throughout the event, so stop by several times. Free.

National Park Ghost Walk

The Ledges Shelter // 6-8 pm // Join costumed characters for a walk through Cuyahoga Valley National Park and hear some ghost stories about the region. Hikes depart from the Ledges Shelter every 30 minutes beginning at 6 pm. Free tickets available at 5 pm.

Adult Financial Education Workshop 

Akron Financial Empowerment Center // 5:30-7:30 pm // The Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council will host a free adult financial education workshop in partnership with the Akron Financial Empowerment Center and Huntington Bank. Topics will include bank services, consumer rights, building and maintaining credit, understanding credit cards, loans and financial recovery. Register online at Free.

Trash ‘N Treat Canal Cleanup 

REACH Opportunity Center // 9 am-1 pm // Come to this cleanup in costume! Volunteers of all ages can help pick up litter around the Towpath Trail and Ohio & Erie Canal. Glendale Cemetery // 2-4:30 pm // Join Van’s Camera for their second annual photo tour of Glendale Cemetery. Register for the class at or in person at Van’s Camera in Canton. $30.

Downtown CF Historical Walking Tour

Pilgrim United Church of Christ // Learn about the history of some of Front Street’s oldest buildings on this one-mile walking tour. Family-friendly but not recommended for young children. Tours are scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 27 at 4 pm and 5 pm and Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 7 pm and 8 pm; more times may be added. Book tickets in advance at $8.
