On Sept. 29, more than 8,000 people finished races during the FirstEnergy Akron Marathon. According to published results, 883 people finished the full marathon, 2,971 finished the half, and about 850 five-person teams finished the relay.
Akronite Israel Merkle, 29, won the men’s race with a time of 2:26:25. The fastest woman was 31-year-old Grace McCarron from Mansfield, who finished in 2:51:11.
In 2017, marathon organizers estimated that the event attracted 3,000 volunteers and 120,000 spectators. Akron Children’s Hospital has been the race series’ title beneficiary since 2016, and runners had raised more than $900,000 for the hospital before the 2018 race.
