4th Annual Martenitsi-Making Workshop
Compass Coffee, 647 E Market St
1pm
It’s time to welcome Spring to Akron with another Martenitsi-making gathering. What’s a Martenitsa? It’s part of an annual Bulgarian tradition. During the last cold days of winter, people join together to make red and white spring summoning bracelets. On or around March 1, you tie on your bracelet or one that someone has gifted you. The idea is that you wear the bracelet until Spring has arrived. Then, you slip the bracelet off, tie it to a tree and make a wish. Some supplies will be provided, but you are encouraged to bring your own: string, yarn, pipe cleaners, scissors, buttons, beads, etc. For more information, follow International Akron on Facebook.

Like the cover art this issue? Then head Downtown for this exhibition by artist Micah Kraus. Micah has developed a technique of processing his photos as laser-etched images, and for this series, he has created works in response to his everyday surroundings — here he brings light to that which is otherwise “faceless and invisible.”

This Drink Tank is extra special because it’s also the release party for bottles of the devilishly delicious Black & Tan that Fred Karm brewed up for us a while back. The combination of smooth, chocolaty porter and perfectly hoppy IPA was too good to be limited to taps. Come have a beer with us and toast to our first three years in print. Here’s to many more!
