Burgers and Brews | Caston & Main Brew Yard

words by Kelcie Erbse

Pulling into the parking lot, I could tell this small, rustic looking building was full of thirsty beer drinkers, and as I walked up to the main entrance, I quickly found out why the party was hopping. This month, Caston & Main Brew Yard is hosting R Shea’s Tap Takeover, which has been bringing in people from all around the Rubber City.

Their draft list had 10 different beers from breweries all over Ohio, including their own Reservoir Red. Since R Shea’s was their monthly special, I got a flight to taste their sweet summer selections: Orange Pineapple Habanero Shandy, Orange-Mango Citra Shandy, Rubber City Red, plus a classic Great Lakes Lake Erie Monster.  Tasting all of these beers made me excited to head down to the valley and get more of what R Shea has this summer.

For a full-size beer, I decided on the Orange-Mango Citra Shandy, because I love everything tropical that tastes like juice. I recommend the Rubber City Red for those that don’t share my sweet tooth. They also had a Towpath Stout from R Shea, drafts from Rhinegeist, North Brewing Co., Jackie O’s and Akron’s own Hoppin’ Frog. They also have a list of specialty cocktails worth checking out and wines from around the Akron area.

The staff was all nice enough for it being incredibly busy. Between their muddling, pouring and running, I got quick bits of information that Caston has a brew takeover monthly, and between that and their well-lit patio, their summer has never seen so much business. The bar area was the busiest, and while there was only one bartender with a lot of tending to do, he seemed to know what he was doing. Other staff members stepped in to help from time to time, which made me think everyone was friendly there.

Now moving onto the good stuff—the food. All the ingredients at Caston & Main Brew Yard are sourced from Ohio based farms and freshly prepared. I ordered the Brew Yard Burger. Inside the pretzel bun that held it all together was a combination of angus beef and chorizo, topped with pepper jack cheese, bacon and a nice layer of chili lime mayo. I don’t know what it is about a pretzel bun, but it’s the perfect sales pitch to this consumer. The burger wasn’t too spicy, but I was glad I didn’t get the Orange Pineapple Habanero Shandy to wash it all down. For sides, they had potato salad, jalapeno and bacon macaroni salad, apple slaw, veggies, salad and chips. They all seemed original, but I had to check out that macaroni salad. Definitely get it.

The burger choices were somewhat limited, but they all sounded great. They had the Bacon & Bleu Burger, Brew Yard Burger, Salmon Burger and they had a slider option too. All the burgers were reasonably priced at $10.

Besides burgers, there was a variety of tacos, salads, sandwiches, pastas and flatbeds. They also have lunch and brunch menus on the weekend.

The drive to Caston & Main Brew Yard is a little farther than most Akron burger joints. You have to head out to the Portage Lakes area, but it’s worth the $7 Uber ride.
