Once upon a time, in a land not too far away, a couple of guys tried to figure out how to export a big city idea to their Blimp City environs. That happened long-distance via text with one guy in Memphis kicking back local brews while a gospel band played at what felt like an outdoor backyard BBQ. When the opportunity arose to use Lock 4 once a month over the summer, The Devil Strip jumped at the chance, immediately remembering this beer garden meets local concert by way of happy hour idea: local craft brew and local food trucks enjoyed with live, local music.
With the help of the City of Akron and Lock 3 staff, DJ Roger Riddle and some gracious local musicians, we launched Live at Lock 4 on a surprisingly chilly evening in May 2016. Over those five months, we hit a few road-bumps but learned a ton and ultimately had a whole lot of fun.
This year, we’ve got a little extra muscle behind us, thanks to The Knight Foundation’s Arts Challenge Grant to give us a little extra wind the next two years. With it, we’re producing music videos for all 12 bands we feature each summer, live streaming the shows and bringing in other cool, local surprises. We’re also excited to partner with Thirsty Dog Brewing, Co. and the Square Scullery to make sure your thirsts are quenched and your appetites appeased.
