So, Chris Horne emailed me to inquire if I might be interested in attending an event at MC Hair & Studio with “the most sought after hair stylist in the fashion world,” Wendy Iles, who would demo her newest product and give me a Paris Blowout. Hm… let me think about it. Uh, yes!
We’re talking about a woman who has styled for every prominent high fashion magazine you can imagine and worked with a variety of cover girls, supermodels and celebrities, like Heidi Klum, Salma Hayek, Kate Hudson, Cate Blanchett, Penelope Cruz, Andie MacDowell, Eva Longoria and Maggie Gyllenhaal—and now me.
Wendy herself was present from the moment my hair touched the ceramic bowl for a shampoo, directing the assisting stylist where to apply another drop of shampoo to a particular spot on my head to “give it some life.” She also used the term “give it a stomach,” my favorite. She uses only three products when styling hair, all of her own creation. Her product line, Iles Formula, includes a shampoo, conditioner and serum that tout the ability to transform any hair type to a spun silk texture in one treatment.
Next the Iles Formula serum was applied with special precaution, tip to root using less as you get closer to the root. A special comb they call a rake distributes the product. (Wendy kept losing hers and chasing around to find what she called “an extension of her fingers.”) After my raking, I received a thorough blowout. Without any further styling or products my hair was buoyant and lustrous.
That was it. No protective heat spray, no mousse, hair spray, shine, nothing. Then Wendy invited me to touch my hair. She asked me how it felt. It didn’t feel like MY hair. Silk is the only accurate description. Wendy is not blowing smoke. Even better yet when you wrap your whole fist around the silk it feels like a dense, spongy mass. My hair is naturally fine. I mean that in every sense of the word. The strands are wispy and it has no “stomach.” This hair was bouncy and shiny and had a stomach like Alfred Hitchcock’s.
The scent described on the Iles Formula product box is “white flowers”—what kind of white flowers? We may never know. And, I don’t care. If you could bottle “sophistication,” this is how I imagine it would smell. Like luxury. I just want to wrap my silky hair around my face and smell it. I’m just barely resisting the urge to invite everyone to touch my hair. Seriously. The next time you see me, touch my hair.
