And we can thank Chrissie Hynde.

BBC Arena approached Hynde to do a documentary in which they would follow her around for one summer, and she thought she could use the opportunity to give back to her city by developing a week of celebration around punk music.

Initiated by Hynde, ‘Punk Week’ has taken off in Akron. Festivities take place between July 7th and July 13th at various Akron venues, including The Akron Art Museum, 22 High Street Gallery at Uncorked Wine Bar, Hive Mind, the Nightlight Theater, Annabell’s Lounge, and Musica.

It all begins with Jill Furmanovsky’s free artist talk about her career photographing some of rock’s biggest and most notorious names at Akron Art Museum on Thursday, July 7. Chrissie Hynde will join Furmanovsky, who photographed her for many years. The talk coincides with the opening of Chunk of Punk, Furmanovsky’s exhibition of photographs that will open at 22 High Street Gallery on July 8.
